CELEBRITIES WITH FIBROMYALGIA SPEAK OUT

In my practice, I’ve met hundreds of patients who are suffering from what is often referred to as “the invisible syndrome.” Fibromyalgia was so named because it’s hidden nature; most victims appear completely normal, even after extensive diagnostic testing. Despite their healthy appearance, patients who have fibromyalgia experience:

It is often hard for physicians to find anyone cause for the pain. Some sufferers are made to feel that it’s all in their head. There is nothing so discouraging and invalidating as a doctor telling you, “Sorry, there is nothing wrong with you.” or worse, “Stop focusing on it so much.” I have great sympathy for those who struggle from this condition. I appreciate greatly when misunderstood illnesses like fibromyalgia are represented in the media to spread awareness and support. Recently there have been many celebrities speaking out about their own personal battle with fibromyalgia. I would like to share some of their stories here.

JO GUEST

Jo guest is a British model who was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2008. But her symptoms began long before she was diagnosed. For a long time, doctors were not able to offer her any help or even an explanation of what was going on with her body. “When you come out of a hospital and you’re told everything’s normal, you should be happy, but I [didn’t] want to be told everything’s normal- I just [wanted] to be told what was wrong with me.”  -Jo Guest in an interview on The Morning Show 

A.J. LANGER 

A.J Langer, most notable for her role as “Rayenne Graff” on the television series “My So-Called Life,” had symptoms of fibromyalgia since she was a young child. Despite her mother having a fibromyalgia diagnosis and A.J. experiencing many of the same symptoms, doctors didn’t believe for a long time that she also suffered from the illness. “Doctors use to think the pain was all in my head. At one visit, I heard a doctor tell my mother I was faking it. My symptoms got the best of me, and I was laid up for about a year with pain, fevers, and stomach troubles. SINEAD O’CONNOR

Sinead O’ Connor is an Irish singer/songwriter who became famous in the late 1980’s for her arrangement of Prince’s song “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Due in part to her painful fibromyalgia symptoms, Shinead took a 2 year break from her career in 2003. “Fibromyalgia is not curable. But it’s manageable. I have a high pain threshold, so that helps. It’s the tiredness part that I have difficulty with. You get to know your patterns and limits, though, so you can work and plan around it. It is made worse, obviously, by stress. LADY GAGA

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, known professionally as Lady Gaga, is a famous American singer/songwriter and actress. She is perhaps one of the most well-known celebrities who has spoken freely about her battle with fibromyalgia. “In our documentary the chronic illness/chronic pain I deal with is fibromyalgia. Eat Lots Of These:
